Introducing: The burqini: A cross between the Afghan burqa and a bikini

SYDNEY: It's called a 'burqini' - a cross between the Afghan burqa and a bikini.
And for the first time it allows Muslim women to go to the beach in Australia without causing problems among male followers of Islam or raising racial tensions and divisions among other surfers.
Until now, Muslim women who wanted to go for a swim often had to step into the water wearing the same kind of clothes that they would wear when they go shopping, keeping their bodies completely covered.
Now the world's first two-piece burqini, made of lycra and with a hijabstyle head covering, has changed the way Muslim women go to the beach.
It is not too figure-hugging to embarrass but it is tight enough to allow wearers to swim freely - and it's quickdrying.
The head-to-ankles outfit has gone on display on Sydney's Cronulla Beach, the scene of race riots between ethnic Lebanese Australians and white Australian youths in the lead-up to Christmas, 2005.
The burqini's introduction has created an instant breakthrough, allowing Muslim women to enter what was once a bastion of white Australian culture.
The burqinis come in a range of colours including black which is expected to be the most popular for Muslim women. . DAILY MAIL
