GREAT METALLURGY! Doctors in Chennai dug out 236 metal objects from a mentally ill man’s stomach.

Chennai: It's nothing short of a minor miracle. Doctors at a government general hospital in Chennai dug out 236 metal objects from the stomach of a man who is mentally ill. Jumma Khan, a senile man has been living with the metal objects in his tummy for the past three-months.

The 236 metal objects recovered in a critical surgery include three pairs of scissors, a watch, 5 mosquito coil-stands and a necklace. A two-hour long videotape of the surgery shows doctors patiently pulling out each one of the objects.

“May be because he swallowed a big nail recently, he panicked. I really don’t know when and how he decided to seek medical advice. That’s why he landed up in the hospital. Otherwise he would have continued to swallow more objects,” said Dr Kalavathy Ponniraivan, Dean at the Govt General Hospital in Chennai.

While children swallowing coins or the mentally ill patients swallowing metal objects has happened in the past, 236 objects in one man's stomach has left the doctors startled. They say the secret behind how he survived is perhaps hidden in one of the very objects that he swallowed.

A necklace that Jumma Khan swallowed saved his life. It got entangled with the rest of the objects in his stomach and wound the entire mass into a tight little ball. Had he not swallowed the necklace, Jumma must have died a painful death.

“Had the metal objects not been entangled, any one of the things could have torn apart the wall of his stomach putting him to death,” Dr Srikumari Damodaran Head of the Department, Gastroenterology.

Today Jumma Khan's family has taken him back home. While they're unwilling to meet the media, the very fact that he's safe now is nothing short of a miracle.
