Mexican seeks World Chilli eating record

MEXICO CITY: For most people, even the smallest bite of a raw chilli pepper means a flushed face and a rush for a gulp of water. But Manuel Quiroz can guzzle down dozens of Mexico's spiciest chillies, rub them on his skin and even squeeze their juice into his eyes without so much as blinking.
The 54-year-old Mexico City taxi driver said that he has made thousands of dollars with his talent and wants to become the world champion chilli eater. But first he needs to find an organisation that can crown him with that title.
"Chillies don't sting me. They don't affect me. It's just like eating fruit," Quiroz said at a market in the Mexican capital. Shoppers stared in amazement as he crunched on a habanero, the hottest chilli pepper in a country that likes its food spicy.

Screeching wild eagles attack paraglider

CANBERRA: Britain's top female paraglider has cheated death after being attacked by a pair of "screeching" wild eagles while competition flying in Australia.
Nicky Moss, 38, watched terrified as two huge birds began tearing into her parachute canopy, one becoming tangled in her lines and clawing at her head 2,500 meters (8,200ft) in the air.
"I heard screeching behind me and a eagle flew down and attacked me, swooping down and bouncing into the side of my wing with its claws," Moss told Reuters on Friday.
"Then another one appeared and together they launched a sustained attack on my glider, tearing at the wing."
The encounter happened on Monday while Moss -- a member of the British paragliding team -- was preparing for world titles this month at Manilla in northern New South Wales state.
One of the giant wedge-tailed eagles became wrapped in the canopy lines and slid down toward Moss, lashing at her face with its talons as her paraglider plummeted toward the ground.

SWANS FOUND LIVING IN CITY APARTMENT

STOCKHOLM: An elderly Swedish woman has taken animal protection too far by sheltering 11 full grown swans in her small, city center apartment, police said on Thursday.
She said she had been looking after the birds in her 25 square meter (270 sq ft) apartment in Stockholm since 2001 after they had been injured. Police took the swans to a shelter and the woman could face charges under animal protection laws. "It is a real feat to be able to transport 11 large swans, which are not known to be the most serene of animals," police department official Bjorn Engstrom told Reuters. AGENCIES
