Fire crews rescue damsels in distress!

FIRE crews in south-east London had some quirky jobs today - cutting rings off fingers and freeing a woman from her own bathroom.

One Dartford crew were called out to saw through three gold rings which had got stuck on an elderly lady's fingers.

They visited an address in Rutland Close, at 5.10pm today armed with a specialist tool to remove the rings.

A Dartford station fireman said: "We get asked to cut rings off people's fingers all the time, but usually its hospitals sending people to us, so it was a bit unusual for us to go to her.

"It can be for a number of reasons - perhaps if somebody has put on weight, is suffering from high blood pressure or has just tried on something too small."

The equipment used to cut through jewellery is a hand operated pair of pliers with a diamond wheel which grinds through the metal, allowing the item to be prised off without putting pressure on the limb.

Meanwhile an East Greenwich crew were called at 5.55pm to an address in Hoskin Street, after a young woman found herself locked in her bathroom.

The woman was trapped for almost an hour by the seized lock before firemen arrived and removed parts of the lock before forcing it open.

One of the crew members who freed her said: "We do get quirky little jobs like this now and then.

"Several months ago we had one call out to a lady who had got her toe stuck in the bath tap.

"However she was fully clothed once we got there, much to our dismay."
